Fly Fishing the Neversink River. . . . a brief introduction.

The lower Neversink River begins above the town of Hasbrouck.  It can be described as a medium sized trout stream with a slow gradient, creating shallow riffles and long flat pools. The bottom drawn water from the reservoir creates a fine tail water fishery.
For the first seven miles or so, the river maintains a very good population of wild brown trout, along with the usual stockers and hold over fish.  The average fish ranges from 9 to 13 inches and like all rivers, there are some good ones here too.  There are good hatches and you can find good surface activity throughout most of the season, even in the hot summer months.
As the river flows towards the town of Bridgeville it starts to warm and pickup more natural runoff.  The look of the river changes with the addition of  pocket water, less vegetation and the "chub".  The fishing is still good, although stocked fish make up more of the catch.

Approaching the "Gorge" area, the river picks up more gradient and most of the fishing is done in pocket water.  This is the most beautiful part of the entire river, with no roads or development you can find solitude and brown trout.

Below the "Gorge", the river maintains its pocket water appearance and for several miles it still fishes well.  The water is much warmer here and you have to pick the coolest summer days to consistently catch trout. This part of the river gets a run of shad every year, middle to late May is the best time.
